How to Build Related Posts in Webflow CMS That Actually Relate
To build related posts that actually relate, filter a Collection list by a shared topic field, such as a category or tag. Exclude the current post and limit the list to a few items. Then sort the results so the best matches show first.

Is your Webflow site slow, costly or hard to find?
Send me your siteWhy it matters
A related posts block is internal linking. Google says every page you care about should have a link from at least one other page. It also says to link to related pages in context, with descriptive anchor text.
A block that shows the newest posts, whatever their topic, does not do that. It sends readers to pages they did not ask for.
Size matters too. A Collection list shows up to 100 items by default. Webflow says that cap exists to keep pages fast. A related block needs far fewer.
How to check it
- Read a related block. Open a few posts. Do the listed items share the topic?
- Open the list settings. Select the Collection list. Go to Element settings, then Collection list settings. Check the Filter, Sort order and Limit items settings.
- Look for the current post. Does a post appear in its own related list?
- Check the topic fields. Open the Collection settings. Is there a Reference or Multi-reference field for category or topic?
- Open posts with an empty topic. Does the block look empty, or fill with unrelated items?
- Confirm the list is dynamic. Webflow says filters, sort order and display limits work only on dynamic Collection lists, not curated ones.
- Check the links. Google generally follows only link elements with an href. View the published page source and confirm each card is a real link.
- Read the anchor text. Google says to avoid generic phrases such as "click here" or "read more."
How to fix it in Webflow
- Add a topic relationship. Hover over the Posts Collection and click the cog icon. Click Add new field. Use a Reference field for one category. Use a Multi-reference field for several topics.
- Fill it in on every post. Webflow lets you mark a field as required, which helps keep topics from being left empty.
- Add a Collection list to the post page. Connect it to the Posts Collection.
- Filter by the topic. In Collection list settings, open Filter and click the plus icon. Choose your topic field. For a Reference, Webflow's example uses Equals and the current item, such as Current author. For a Multi-reference, Webflow's examples include "Tags" contains "Current Tag." Click Save.
- Exclude the current post. Add another filter. Use "is not" and Current Collection item. Webflow describes this for excluding the current post.
- Sort by what helps readers. Open Sort order and click the plus icon. Pick a date field and choose Newest to oldest. For hand-picked order, add a Number field, enter a unique number on each item and sort by it. Avoid Random order. Webflow says it reshuffles the list on every publish.
- Limit the list. Turn on Limit items. Enter a number in Show, such as 3. Webflow says leaving Show blank displays all items.
- Hide empty blocks. On a Collection page, you can use visibility rules such as Is set and Is not set on the topic field. Webflow says these rules work inside a list connected to that Collection, or on that Collection's page.
- Make each card a clear link. Link the whole card to the item's page. Use the post title as the visible text. Do not chain several links together.
- Publish and test. Check several posts, including one with no topic. Confirm no post links to itself.

FAQ
Why does my related list show the current post?
The list is probably missing the filter that excludes it. Add "is not" and Current Collection item.
Should I use Random order for related posts?
Not when relevance matters. Webflow says Random order reshuffles the list on every publish. It has no link to topic.
How many related posts should I show?
Google says there is no ideal number of links per page, but too many is likely a problem. Start with a small number and review it.
