How to Keep Growing Webflow CMS Lists Fast With Limits and Pagination

To keep a growing Webflow CMS list fast, show only as many items as the page needs. Use Limit items for short lists such as "latest posts." Use pagination for archives. Webflow caps a Collection list at 100 items, and it says that cap exists to keep pages fast.

How to Keep Growing Webflow CMS Lists Fast With Limits and Pagination

Why it matters

A Collection list shows up to 100 items by default. Items beyond that are hidden unless you use pagination or Skip. A growing blog can pass 100 items without anyone noticing, and the oldest posts then vanish from the page.

Webflow also limits each page to 40 Collection lists, including nested ones. You can nest up to 10 lists, up to 3 levels deep.

Google crawls links, not clicks. It generally follows URLs in the href of link elements. Googlebot does not click buttons or run scripts that need a user action. Content that only loads that way may not be found.

How to check it

  1. Compare counts. Check how many items your Collection has. If it has more than 100 and the list is not paginated, some items are hidden.
  2. Open the list settings. Select the Collection list. Go to Element settings, then Collection list settings. See whether Limit items or Paginate items is on.
  3. Check the Show value. If Limit items is on, a blank Show field means all items display. A number means only that many display.
  4. Count lists on the page. Include nested ones. At 40, Webflow blocks new lists and shows an error.
  5. Check for duplicated lists. A common workaround sets Skip to 100 on a copy of a list. Each copy counts toward the 40-list limit.
  6. Click through the published page. Click Next and watch the address bar. Google says each page of a paginated list should have its own URL.
  7. Test the list page in PageSpeed Insights. Compare mobile and desktop.
  8. Know the search limit. Webflow says its site search indexes only the first pagination page.

How to fix it in Webflow

  1. Decide what each list is for. A teaser list shows a few items. An archive shows everything over time.
  2. Limit teaser lists. Turn on Limit items and enter a number in Show. Keep homepage and sidebar lists short.
  3. Paginate archives. Select the list and turn on Paginate items in Collection list settings. Set Items per page. Webflow allows 1 to 100. Webflow says fewer items per page can improve load time.
  4. Style the controls. Webflow adds a Pagination element with Previous and Next links. You can style them and turn on Show page count. Webflow says Next and Previous are hidden if items per page exceed the total items.
  5. Avoid copy-and-skip lists for big archives. They use up your 40-list limit. Pagination is the cleaner option.
  6. Skip custom numbered pagination unless you need it. Webflow says numbered pagination is not built in. Its workaround uses a slider with several Collection lists, which adds more lists to the page.
  7. Keep content reachable by links. Do not rely on a load-more button or infinite scroll alone. Google says these patterns do not handle very large result sets well. Do not use # fragments for page numbers. Google ignores them.
  8. Give each page its own canonical. Google says not to point every paginated page to page one.
  9. Keep filter and sort variations out of the index. Google suggests noindex or robots.txt rules for these.
  10. Publish and test again. Click through every page of each list.

Checklist

  • Every Collection list is checked against its Collection size.
  • No list silently hides items past 100.
  • Teaser lists use Limit items.
  • Archives use Paginate items.
  • Items per page is set on purpose.
  • Pages are under the 40-list limit.
  • Each paginated page has its own URL.
  • Links to later pages are real links, not buttons only.
  • Paginated pages are not all canonicalized to page one.
  • The list page was tested after publishing.

FAQ

Why are some of my CMS items missing from the page?

A Collection list shows 100 items by default. Use pagination to show more across several pages. Skip also works, but it adds lists.

Is pagination bad for SEO?

Google recommends unique URLs and crawlable links for each page. It says rel="next" and rel="prev" are no longer used by Google. Other search engines may still use them.

Can I use load more or infinite scroll instead?

You can, but Google says they handle very large result sets poorly. Googlebot also does not click buttons. Make sure later items are reachable through links.
