Webflow Sitemap Settings: What to Include and What to Exclude

Include the canonical pages you want to appear in search results. Exclude pages you do not want indexed by turning Sitemap Indexing off for them. In Webflow, that also adds a noindex tag. Keep Auto-generate sitemap on, unless you have a clear reason to write your own.

Webflow Sitemap Settings: What to Include and What to Exclude

Why it matters

Google says a sitemap is a hint. It does not guarantee that Google crawls the listed URLs, and it does not guarantee indexing. But sitemaps can influence which canonical URLs Google shows in results.

Google also says to list only your preferred URL when the same content exists at several URLs. Mixed signals cause trouble. Webflow says pages disallowed in robots.txt still appear in the auto-generated sitemap if it is enabled.

Webflow regenerates the sitemap each time you publish. It uses your default domain. Webflow says URLs on any other domain return a 301 redirect that search engines read as a missing page.

How to check it

  1. Open the sitemap. Go to yourdomain.com/sitemap.xml.
  2. Look for pages you want indexed. Your key pages should be listed.
  3. Look for pages you do not want. Check for test, thank-you or duplicate pages.
  4. Check the domain. Every URL should use your default domain.
  5. Check the URL style. Google says to use fully qualified, absolute URLs.
  6. Check Sitemap Indexing. On static pages, open Page settings, then SEO settings. On CMS posts, open the item and go to Item details.
  7. Check robots.txt. Go to Site settings, then SEO, then Indexing. Look for Disallow rules on pages that are in the sitemap.
  8. Check Search Console. Open the Sitemaps report. It shows when Googlebot accessed the sitemap and any processing errors.
  9. Check the size. A single sitemap is limited to 50MB uncompressed or 50,000 URLs.

How to fix it in Webflow

  1. Turn on the auto-generated sitemap. Go to Site settings, then SEO, then Sitemap. Set Auto-generate sitemap to Yes. Click Save changes and publish. Webflow says once /sitemap.xml is created and published, it cannot be deleted.
  2. Set a default domain. The sitemap uses it.
  3. Exclude static pages. Open Page settings, then SEO settings. Turn Sitemap Indexing off. Publish. Webflow adds a noindex tag and removes the page from the sitemap. This works only if the auto-generated sitemap is enabled.
  4. Exclude CMS items. Open the item, go to Item details and turn Sitemap Indexing off. The CMS item toggle needs a paid Site plan.
  5. Do not use robots.txt to remove pages. Webflow says disallowed pages still appear in the sitemap. For content already indexed, it recommends the Sitemap Indexing toggle instead.
  6. List one version of each page. Fix duplicates with canonical tags or 301 redirects so the sitemap lists only the preferred URL.
  7. Do not add the sitemap to robots.txt yourself. Webflow adds it automatically. A manual line means search engines see two sitemaps.
  8. Use a custom sitemap only when you must. Set Auto-generate sitemap to No. Paste your XML into the Custom sitemap.xml field. Save and publish. You then maintain it yourself. With Localization on, you must add hreflang tags by hand.
  9. Skip priority and changefreq. Google ignores both. It uses lastmod only when it is consistently accurate.
  10. Submit it. In Search Console, open Sitemaps. Enter sitemap.xml and click Submit.
  11. Publish and re-check. Open the sitemap again and confirm the changes.

  • Only preferred URLs are listed.
  • The sitemap is not added to robots.txt twice.
  • The sitemap is submitted in Search Console.
  • The Sitemaps report shows no errors.

FAQ

Does a sitemap guarantee indexing?

No. Google calls a sitemap a hint. It does not guarantee crawling or indexing.

Can I delete sitemap.xml in Webflow?

No. Webflow says it cannot be deleted once created and published. You can turn off auto-generation and replace it with a custom sitemap.

Why does a page I blocked in robots.txt still appear in my sitemap?

Webflow says disallowed pages still appear in the auto-generated sitemap. Turn Sitemap Indexing off for the page instead.
