How to Improve Core Web Vitals on a Webflow Website

To improve Core Web Vitals on a Webflow site, first find out which metric fails: LCP, INP or CLS. Then trace it to one element or one script and fix that. On most Webflow sites the causes are a heavy hero image, too many third-party scripts in site-wide custom code, and media that loads without reserved space.

What the three metrics measure

• LCP (Largest Contentful Paint): how long the largest visible element takes to render. Good is 2.5 seconds or less.
• INP (Interaction to Next Paint): how fast the page responds to clicks, taps and key presses. Good is 200 milliseconds or less.
• CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift): how much content jumps unexpectedly. Good is 0.1 or less.

A page passes when 75% of real visits meet each threshold. Details are on web.dev.

Start with field data

I start with the Core Web Vitals report in Google Search Console. It groups failing URLs, and on Webflow those groups usually map to templates: the homepage, a CMS Collection template, a set of landing pages. Fix the template and every page using it improves. Use the Lighthouse test in PageSpeed Insights to debug, on mobile settings.

How to fix LCP

PageSpeed Insights names the LCP element in its diagnostics. It is usually the hero image or hero heading.

• Resize and compress the image to the largest size the design shows.
• Use an Image element instead of a background image. Webflow creates responsive variants for Image elements, so phones get a smaller file. Background images are served at full size.
• Do not lazy load the hero. In the image settings, set its loading option to eager. Keep lazy loading for images further down.
• Remove load animations on the hero. An Interaction that starts the hero at opacity 0 delays its paint until the script runs.

If the LCP element is text, cut font families and weights in Site settings and keep the heading free of load animations.

How to fix INP

INP fails when the main thread is busy when someone clicks. On Webflow that work usually comes from scripts added on top of the site.

1. Read Site settings > Custom code, each page's Page settings > Custom code, and Embed elements in components. List every script.
2. Remove tools nobody uses: old heatmaps, duplicate analytics, past campaign pixels.
3. Move page-specific scripts into that page's custom code.
4. Add defer to external scripts where the vendor allows it.
5. In Google Tag Manager, replace All Pages and every-click triggers with specific ones.

Also limit large CMS Collection lists and avoid many "while page is scrolling" interactions on long pages.

How to fix CLS

• Give image wrappers a fixed height or aspect ratio in the Style panel.
• Give embed wrappers, such as forms and booking widgets, a min-height.
• Make cookie banners fixed so they overlay content.
• Animate with Move and Opacity instead of height, width or margin.

Example: a hypothetical 200-page marketing site loads a chat widget and two analytics setups in the site-wide footer. Removing the duplicate analytics is a faster INP win there than any design change.
