How to Track Button Clicks in Webflow With Google Tag Manager
Give each button a unique ID in Webflow. In Tag Manager, create a Click trigger that fires on that ID. Then create a GA4 Event tag with a clear event name and attach the trigger. Test it in Preview, publish the container, and confirm the event in GA4.

Is your Webflow site slow, costly or hard to find?
Send me your siteWhy it matters
GA4 does not know which of your buttons matter. Enhanced measurement collects clicks only on links to other domains and file downloads. A "Book a call" button on your own site is not part of that.
A button click is also easy to track badly. A trigger with no conditions applies to every page. Google says adding conditions is recommended for performance.
A trigger built on button text breaks when someone edits the copy. An ID does not change unless you change it.
How to check it
- Confirm Tag Manager is installed. Open Preview and connect your site. If it connects, the container loads.
- Check for a second GA4 install. Use only one method, so you do not create duplicate tracking.
- Find the button. Select it in the Designer. Is it a link element or another type? Open Element settings and see whether an ID is set.
- Look for duplicate IDs. The Webflow Audit panel flags duplicate element IDs on a page.
- Review existing triggers. In Tag Manager, look for click triggers with no conditions.
- Check GA4 for the event. Open Realtime, click the button and watch for the event name.
- Check consent. Google says events will not appear if client-side privacy controls are in place, or if consent mode is active and you have not consented.
How to fix it in Webflow
- Give the button an ID. Select the button. In the Element settings panel, enter a short, unique ID, such as cta-hero. ID is managed there, not under Custom attributes.
- Publish the site. The ID must be on the live page before you can test it.
- Create a Click trigger. In Tag Manager, go to Triggers, then New. Choose a Click trigger. All Elements tracks clicks on any element. Just Links tracks only clicks on HTML link elements.
- Add a condition. Choose Some Clicks. Add the condition Click ID equals your ID. Google says Click ID returns the clicked element's id attribute.
- Handle buttons that leave the page. If the button goes to another page, use Just Links. Turn on Wait for Tags, so the page waits for tags to fire or a timeout. Turn on Check Validation to fire only on valid link clicks.
- Create the GA4 tag. Go to Tags, then New. Choose Google Analytics: GA4 Event. Enter your Measurement ID. Enter an event name, such as cta_click. Google gives signup_newsletter as an example. Special characters are not allowed in event names.
- Attach the trigger. Click the Triggering box and select your Click trigger.
- Test in Preview. In the Workspace tab, click Preview. Enter your site URL and click Connect. Click the button on your site. Confirm the tag fired.
- Publish. Click Submit, then choose Publish and Create Version. Name the version and click Publish.
- Check GA4. Watch Realtime. DebugView needs some additional configuration, according to Google.
- Mark it as a key event if it counts as a conversion. In GA4, go to Admin, Data display, Events, and click the star. Google says this affects reports only from that point on.

FAQ
Should I use Click Text or Click ID?
Click ID is steadier. Click Text breaks when the button copy changes. Google's own example uses Click Text, so it works, but only while the text stays the same.
What is the difference between All Elements and Just Links?
Google says All Elements tracks clicks on any element. Just Links tracks only clicks on HTML link elements.
Why does Preview show the click but GA4 shows nothing?
Check consent and privacy controls. Google says events will not appear if they are in place. Also remember Realtime shows events within minutes, while standard reports can take up to 24 hours.
Dealing with this on a live Webflow site? It is the kind of work I do in analytics. Send me your site and I will tell you what I would fix first.
